There are agencies that do that, you might want to ask over there. They have many programs and stuff, just ask at your school.
2 :
http://www.afs.org/afs_or/home http://www.iseusa.com/student-info.htm Yahoo! search would yield more agencies. I don't know of any that actually *exchange* students.
3 :
You would need to contact an exchange student organization. They handle all of the "work" after that! They will find you a school, family, etc. THey also arrange your flights, insurance, orientations, etc. I know that the following operate in Spain as well as in the U.S. and are on the CSIET list (certified). AFS, Aspect Foundation, Rotary, YFU. They are all respected and reliable all over the U.S. You might also look at http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ for ideas and info too. It's an on line community of exchange students. Buena Suerte!

What type of visa will I need to work and live in Spain?

What type of visa will I need to work and live in Spain?
I am an American student, recent graduate, wanting to travel to Spain with my fiance to live for 8 months. She will be working there on a Student Visa as part of her University course. I will also be seeking work to earn money so I know that I cannot be on a tourist visa. What type of visa I should aquire to make this possible? Would it make it easier if we were married? For Example, could I travel with her on her student visa as her spouse?

What you need to do is find out what type of card is accepted in Spain. If you look at the back of a credit card it has the brand of card (not Visa / MasterCard) I can't remember off hand what the different types are, maybe "cirrus" Call a major bank ie. wells fargo and ask them if they know. Or somewhere that has travel warnings / information. I have been to south America and I was able to use my credit card and debit card (through wells fargo) while I was there. Also make sure you call the company you have the credit cards through and tell them you are traveling out of the country or they will turn it off!! VERY important..
2 :
You should really contact the Embassy in Madrid for definitive detail on what Visa you will need
3 :
I lived in Spain on a student visa, and then looked into getting one after college to work. It is not easy. You have to have someone who will hire you to sponsor you, but finding someone to do that without having a visa is tricky. I am not sure about travelling on your girlfriend/potential wife's visa. You need to contact the Spanish consulate that covers the region where you live. You can find this information online fairly easily. I used the San Francisco consulate and it was VERY difficult to get ahold of them or to get straight answers. They are open limited hours, I think 8-1 or something like that. I also know that sometimes I had to speak Spanish, so if that is a barrier for you, you might need to find someone who can do the calling for you. Good luck, it is a lot of work, but being able to live in Spain is well worth it in my opinion!

How do I get my student visa approved if I want to go a month in advance?
I am trying to go to a spanish training program in Spain a month before my actual school starts. Will my student visa only work starting the day school starts or will they give me one ahead of time beginning when the spanish program starts? Will they even give me a student visa and let me go into the country before my university starts?

Will I be denied a Student Visa if I overstayed my tourist visa years ago?

Will I be denied a Student Visa if I overstayed my tourist visa years ago?
I lived and worked in Spain illegally for about a year. However, I traveled quite a bit and was constantly leaving and re-entering Spain, so I have several stamps in my passport and was never stopped at customs for overstaying my tourist visa. I am now applying for a student visa to return to study in Spain and I was just wondering if the visa will be denied because of my past travels? And if so, will my passport be "red flagged" disabling my return to the EU? Thanks for your input!

2 :
It is possible........but it is well known that Europeans for some reason look the other way [even when red flagged] in the SIS that they look the other way to American passports depending on how big the benefit will be to the local economy.A student certainly can give a country experiencing record unemployment a big reason to look that other way even if [red flagged] in the system negatively.

How do you greet someone from Spain?

How do you greet someone from Spain?
My own family is from Nicaragua, and whenever we greet someone new, it's a kiss on the cheek. Is it the same in Spain? We're getting an exchange student, and usually when I meet new people if they're from America, I shake their hand, but if it's anyone Hispanic, I give them a kiss on the cheek. Is that okay with my exchange student? I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable. Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm culturally oblivious.

exactly the same
2 :
just wait to see what they do.
3 :
Kissing him on the cheek at the first meeting might make him feel uncomfortable. Just shake his hand.
4 :
If its formal, its two kiss on the cheeks. One for each cheek. However, a simple handshake or hug will be enough.
5 :
Are you communicating with them now by email or messaging? Tell them you are trying to learn about their culture. Ask a few questions including how they great new people. This way you will know what they prefer.

when is the cheapest time to buy a fare to spain?

when is the cheapest time to buy a fare to spain?
My best friend is going to Spain this spring semester as an exchange student, and I'm planning on going to Spain for a week to visit her (probably in march or april ?) Please help! I'm flying out from virginia
Other - Spain - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Just buy a few weeks in advance and leave and come back during the middle of the week. Flights leaving and /or coming back on Thurs. thru Monday are at least 25% more because people want to travel more on those days.
2 :
try to make travel arrangements bti/w tuesday - friday the best time is as soon as you can airlines work on a srategy, that is they sell limited no of seats at a particular price, and when those seats are sold out the price goes up. as far as low fare is considered, they have certain rstrictions too which could be like paying a chng fee for making changes, or non refundable status of tickets
3 :
Easter is towards the end of March this year. Flights will probably be expensive at that time of the year. Mid week flights are usually the cheapest. You don´t say which country you are flying from. There can be huge savings depending on where you live and which carrier you fly with. Furthermore, you don´t say where in Spain you are flying to. Flying to a regional airport may be cheaper than flying to a hub or larger airport. Edit; They´ve just started flights direct non stop from New York to Málaga if it helps in anyway.
4 :
Try to avoid taking a trip when it is holiday time here in the US. This is when most people travel and when prices are the highest. So if you can avoid the Easter break and go before the summer you should save some money. Speak to a travel agent about consolidator fares. These are usually the cheapest rates.
5 :
on the other hand, even though it's more expensive, it's also prime time to visit Spain (Easter time) because of the Semana Santa celebrations in Andalucia. That means it's going to be more crowded, difficult to see many monuments, and more expensive, but also a most interesting event to take part in. (just some food for thought). Where is your friend studying?

How easy and cheap is it to live in a hostel in Spain?

How easy and cheap is it to live in a hostel in Spain?
Im a former spanish student from london and want to move to spain for a year or two. Does anyone know how easy it is to find cheap accomodation over there? I would preferably be looking for somewhere in Barcelona but im open to suggestions.

Cheap, it depends if you want to sleep in a dormitory with other 10 pple or if you want to have your own room. prices might be around 30 euros for an individual room to 15 for a bed in a dormitory. It also depends on the hostel. about easy: you just have too google hostel barcelona, or alberg barcelona or albergue barcelona and you'll find several youth hostels. Check the websites, locations and prices, etc and book the one you like the most. here you have one that seem quite nice but also expensive http://www.peretarres.org/alberg/
2 :
Most hostels have a maximum of 7 days that you can stay there. The best option for finding accomodation is to look on this website for a room in a share house (the prices are monthly unless stated otherwise) : http://www.loquo.com/en_us Stay in a hostel when you first arrive then you can look for somewhere cheaper. It will be much cheaper to find share accomodation than to pay for a hostel. Also when you walk around the streets you will see lots of ads stuck everywhere offering accomodation.

Here's a good one, but unless things have changed vastly, it simply offers Spanish language. http://www.academicintl.com/spain/barcelona/summer_int_lang.html However, you will want to enjoy the many cultural facilities of the city together with the numerous friends you will make!
2 :
Try EfTours. They have lots of experience worlwide. THis summer my class is actually taking a trip to Spain. We will be going through Sevilla, Barcelona, and Madrid in a bout two weeks. There are guided tours, free days and there is a package which included events, like bull fights and such. If you want to explore the city, you have free nights ( no curfew i believe).

In Portugal- Coimbra Coimbra has been called The city of the students, mainly because it is the site of the oldest and one of the largest universities in Portugal - the University of Coimbra, a public university whose origins can be traced back to the 13th century. Nowadays, it has students from 70 different nationalities; almost 10% of its students are foreigners, making it Portugal's most international university. A large number of higher education students from all of Portugal chose Coimbra's higher learning institutions to study, due to the wide availability of degrees offered in different fields, the student-friendly environment of the city, and the prestige of many of its learning institutions allied to the ancient tradition of Coimbra as the historical capital of higher studies in Portugal.

In Portugal definetely Coimbra or Lisbon. In Spain maybe (I'm guessing!) Barcelona, Madrid or Salamanca.

If my student visa was denied, can I still go to Spain for a 90 day period?

If my student visa was denied, can I still go to Spain for a 90 day period?
I'm studying abroad in Spain, where I'm living with a host family, and going to school. I was originally just staying one semester, but I decided to change my stay to an entire year. In order to extend my stay, I had to renew my student visa by returning to the States first. My visa was denied in Madrid. If I appeal, the consulate said it could take up to 1.5 months to find out anything. I don't have time to appeal... could I still go to Spain without a visa and stay 90 days (no visa is required for a 90 day stay)? I would need to go to school, also.

yes you could try the Visa waiver whilst you appeal, but you run a risk of being deported. Unless you are a security risk you may just get away with it.

Nope. In fact, I've no idea where Vigo is. Why are you choosing such an isolated/unknown city? Is it a good school? Does it have what you're looking for? Is it the only one your school exchanges with? I'm sure, no matter what your reasons, you'll finish up, and for the rest of your life, you'll think of it as your other home. Have fun! (Advice: Immerse yourself completely! Try EVERYTHING! Stay for a full school year.) *edit* Okay...found a link....again...WHY there? (yeah...kinda far from everything...hope you like the beach...looks pretty.)

Summer study abroad programs to Spain for high school students?

Summer study abroad programs to Spain for high school students?
I'm a High School Junior. I'm planning on going to Spain this summer for about a month or so for language immersion, just that alot of the programs are soo expensive! Plus airfare is pretty costly as well. Does anyone know any good programs that cost from $3,000 - $4,500 that I can go with? Preferably one that offers dorms (i'd rather not homestay). Where in spain would be best to stay at, Barcelona or San Sebastion? Thanks ( :

Dear friend. As I know there are probably some high school counselors avaiable to you that could offer you information on such matter. Also there is a program at least here in Utah, where young high schoolers can get an advance college climatisierung . Where they can go to the University and receive college credit before going further into their expertise. Any how, on such occassion, you could go to the language department and they do sponsor students to go abroard to learn the native language. They could truly advice you it's their job. Here are some helpful links. And buenas noches amigo/amiga. Angelika USA?UTAH

You should look into Explorica Summer Academy. I went on their Spain program the summer before junior year. It was three weeks, about $4000 (The price has gone up a little since then due to weak dollar). It consisted of a week of traveling around the country, then two weeks in Marbella (Costa del Sol) going to school six hours a day for language immersion at Enforex school. On the weekend between the two weeks of school we went to Gibraltar and Morocco. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot at the school. It was small classes with native speaker teachers. There were about 25 kids on the trip with two really nice chaperones and a tour guide. We stayed at hotels that were quite nice. The $4000 included airfare, hotel, breakfast and dinner everyday, school, basically everything. I definitely suggest the program. They even have this thing called a tour diary that is online while you're gone. The chaperons uploads pictures and writes about what you did everyday and your parents can go online and check on you. I really liked that we got a lot of free time with this program. On days we had school, we met for breakfast and dinner and were responsible for getting to school on time. The rest of the day was ours. I went to the beach everyday. The chaperons were really nice. We had a midnight curfew, were they would check in on us in our rooms, but other than that we could be wherever we wanted all the time. http://www.explorica-study-abroad.com/

Most exchange organizations have summer programs. You can find a list of those certified to operate in the U.S. at www.csiet.org. You should also ask your counselor for a recommendation as a program is only as good as its local representatives. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU are reliable everywhere. They are all homestay however. Dorm programs are usually at the university level. However, if you want to go THIS summer, you MUST HURRY! I'm pretty sure most applications are closing soon (if not already!). I've already picked my exchange student for the 2008-2009 school year! Good luck though!

2 :
What do you mean when you say you have a passport in Spain. Are you a Spanish citizen? US citizens do not need visa to travel to Spain. If you are going to school there you should check the website of the school you are interested in to see what is required of you to obtain a student visa. Here is the link to the schools admissions website that tell you what you need. http://www.lesroches.es/les_roches_marbella/en/en-en/index.cfm?page=/les_roches_marbella/home/admissions/visa-requirements-process When you apply for a loan from a REPUTABLE lender here in the US you will be required to give details as to the purpose of the loan.
3 :
For a student to finance his educational costs had never been as easier as it is now. Earlier on if you or your family could not support the educational costs then there was no hope of continuing studies. But now the student loans have changed the entire scenario. You will now do not have to worry but to make your mind to reach your goal. These loans will help you to get what you want in each and every step.If you want to adopt these loans for your higher studies than the amount required will be bigger. However, based on the type of the course the expenses vary and on this basis you can choose to pick either the secured or the unsecured loans. Keep your valuable asset as security and get the secured loans. Amount offered is higher in it. http://www.worldbestloans.com/ For the unsecured no collateral is required and the amount offered is small. So, it is essential to calculate the total requirement of finance for picking the right loan.Such loans will not let you spend extra money while you pursue the course. Right from the admission in college to habitation, buying study materials, foods, travel expenses, medical expenses and classroom projects are being financed by it. So, there is no scope for the student to think or to take tension about all those things. For repaying it too you will not have to bother much. As soon as the course gets completed you can start repaying the loan. If not that you can repay the loan after getting a job too. The rate of interest too is kept very small in it.
4 :
You can sometimes use some federal student loan money to study abroad. Look up your school here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLoo… If it's listed, they take federal money. I looked up your school and couldn't find it. Look into scholarships for study abroad (at the same time and take the scholarships first). You might be able to get private student loans. They are more expensive and you will likely need a cosigner. If your school is not accredited by the U.S. Dept. of Education, private loans are not usually available.

The reality is, you're not going to get a payment that FAST! You should have said so much earlier, as it takes time to process and distribute financial aide. One thing that you can do, which maybe your only option for quick money, is to go to one of your major banks, and apply for a student loan to pay for the cost of going to school abroad. In my experience, it was a good decision because my bank gave me more time to pay off my loan, and based my payments on what i was making per year. So, Go talk to you bank! I provided some links for you, in case your from the USA.

Read this and tell me if you think it is fair... My class recently got an exchange student from Spain "Nina"

Read this and tell me if you think it is fair... My class recently got an exchange student from Spain "Nina"
.. and she doesn't speak English yet, though she is trying. Because I am one of the few people in the school who can speak Spanish, we have become pretty good friends. Before spring break, we were sitting in Biology class and talking. The teacher was at the other end of the room and couldn't hear us. She started talking about buying a car. She said she wanted a black car with black leather interior. I told her that too many people have black cars and she should get a red one. Heres the problem.... In Spanish the word for black is "Negr0". So we were talking and said the word several times. Out of nowhere a girl who is African American ran up to us and slammed her hand down on the table in front of my face. She screamed at me and Nina and told us to shut up and she started crying. The teacher came over to see and she told him that we were talking about her and saying the "N" word. I told him we weren't and tried to explain but she kept crying and he took her side... to be continued.. .. he took her side and sent us to the principals office. I swear that girl made such a big fuss. Crying and screaming and saying that she had enough problems in her life... blah blah. Meanwhile I was trying to translate what was going on to Nina and the principal told me to be quiet... Like she didn't want me speaking Spanish in front of her. Before we were let go, Nina was crying, I was crying, and we both got In school suspension for 3 days when break is over. I just don't think its fair or right. I wasn't even talking about her. Thats just how you say black in Spanish.. I don't know any other way and I cant make up words or stop saying the name of a color just because it sounds like something it's not. I guess I just want to know how you all feel about this. What would you do??? Well, I think maybe around five people, myself included, speak Spanish at my school. We don't have a Spanish teacher. I think the girl freaked the principal out pretty bad. Plus the principal is one of those "Only speak English" sort of people. The girl really was making a HUGE scene, though.

Go before the school board and tell them. It would also help if you had a spanish teacher or another credible person who speaks spanish to back you up.
2 :
I would tell your parents and have them make a fuss with the principal. I would never let my child get accused and in trouble for that. You shouldn't suffer because other people are ignorant. It's totally not fair to you or the exchange student. Tell someone and everyone the truth.
3 :
thats just plain sad, shudent the teacher/principal know that shes an exchange student and cant speak english? try talking to your parents about it and hopefully they can talk to the school about this misunderstanding
4 :
talk to your parents and they can go to the school with you to explain what has happened, the 3 day suspension will be revoked. at worst, a lawyer. but it probably won't go that far.
5 :
Its a bit stupid, why wouldnt anyone listen to you when you were trying to say that negro is black in spanish, but why would the girl think you were talking about her anyway, just because you said negro though? Add: Where theres the ***** its suppose to say negr0 it blocks it out for some reason
6 :
Personally I agree with you...it's not fair and them suspending both of you without taking your side into consideration is completely wrong and unethical of the school. What I think you should do if this whole situation is really uncomfortable for you is to talk to both your parents and Nina's parents about the situation...then once school begins all of you go talk to the principal. You two have rights as students and the school suspending you upon an assumption of racist comments is a pretty big problem that shouldn't be left without resolving. It's true, your classmate might have honestly felt horrible b/c she believed you two were referring to her with racist words...but it all leads to only that, her assumptions and it was completely wrong of your teacher to accuse you of something so serious if he himself didn't know or understand what it was that you two were talking about. Hope it all works out for the best hun. ^_^
7 :
Sounds like a total misunderstanding. You need parents and teachers to back you up. You may still lose out with the suspension, but this can be prevented from happening again. There's no reason for you to be punished for someone else's ignorance. Saying 'cafe' doesn't mean you're thirsty and crave doughnuts, right? That other girl could learn a thing or two and the understanding will hopefully keep her from staying upset with what she 'thought' you were saying about her.
8 :
Get a lawyer and sue. After all it's the American way right? But seriously contact the ACLU or some other drastic measure. Do it all on the grounds that the black girl and or teachers were offended that you were speaking Spanish.
9 :
Gosh that is such a no win situation because I feel sorry for all parties involved .For you and your new friend and for the girl that thought that she was being called names too. I think that your parents and another person that speaks Spanish should have a meeting with the principal and explain the innocence of what was said and then the principal and all three girls involved should sit down and talk.Bring a Spanish/English dictionary if necessary. Good luck to all of you! I do not think however that you should be reprimanded for doing nothing wrong
10 :
This is terrible, but I think that the Spanish language leaves alot to be desired. In the UK we have tried to avoid this. We have had to drop everyday words in our language due to the possibility of offending people and this situation demonstrates why. We can't use words like blackboard any more its a chalkboard we are not allowed golliwogs all in the cause of being Politically Correct. You need to explain tot he school board what happened and explain to the other parties concerned what happened. Point out that your sorry that has caused offense but as you have said it was a clear misunderstanding and your meant no offense, if your guilty of anything it was talking in class, but not racism.
11 :
Please tell them Rev Wright said some terrible things and didn't get into trouble. Also if the teachers were educated on the whys and reasons you were helping this foreign student you should be just fine and they should say I'm sorry to you. Sorry for your bad day. Best to you.

Read this and tell me if you think it is fair... My class recently got an exchange student from Spain "Nina"

Read this and tell me if you think it is fair... My class recently got an exchange student from Spain "Nina"
... and she doesn't speak English yet, though she is trying.

1 :
Wow...talk about a miscommunication. I the black girl should learn to know what she is talking about...could she not hear you speaking in spanish...I don't mean to sound insensitive but that is stretching it...I think you need to take some action against the administrators....that is very uncalled for
2 :
Man, everyone knows the Spanish word for black, but of course if she's right in front of you and you're speaking a different language, she may be insecure and think you're talking about her. But I think it sucks from both perspectives. Well that's not fair! You can't get suspended for doing nothing, that isn't your fault that that girl overreacted. She didn't even know what you were saying, dang.
3 :
Sounds like this girl is paranoid? If the teacher doesnt believe you then say you're sorry you were talking in class (which may be the reason she "took sides") but truly you were talking about cars not people! Also if this girl calms down point out neither of you know her and that yes you were really talking about cars not her! Is it possible her name sounds like some Spanish word?
4 :
Ok you have a right to be upset and angry coz it was unfair to just attack you and suspend you if "BLACK" is called "NEGRO" in spanish BUT you seem like your a sweet girl.. i say be the big one and go to the girl who thought you were talking about her and explain it calmly and bring proof from the net or anything to support what your saying .. she was hurt and looks like a sensitive girl .. explain to her calmly and with care :) These things really hurt and uffend teens.. they get scared for life sometimes.. Hope it works out for you
5 :
No offense but your school is way in the wrong they should have checked their facts. How hard is it for them to look it up or ask someone. Did you tell your parents if not you need to let them know what happenned so they can try and straighten it out don't let them punish you for no reason.
6 :
If i was in your case, I would seriously file a class action lawsuit against your school board. This is just nonsense.
7 :
Wow this is truly unfair!! Your school shouldn't have taken actions like this. You need to go speak to an adult, or complain and let people know about what happened. Obviously, the school doesn't understand Spanish that well. You should not have been suspended!! This African American girl needs to understand that you aren't talking about her. Go speak to her calmly and sensibly, she has probably been offended by others before, and that explains her reaction. You need to tell someone, you shouldn't have to face the consequences for something you didn't do at all. This is insane! you can take legal action as well. Good luck..! I hope you get out of this soon.
8 :
I don't think you should have been suspended even if you were using the word in an inappropriate context. But considering that you weren't even doing that, I find this completely ridiculous.
9 :
That is so messed up! Negr0 is the Spanish word for the color black. There is no other word for it. Pero que se puede acer? Nada. Asi son ellos. Todo les ofende.
10 :
I think it totally unfair being punished for speaking spanish to the exchange student & if that's the reason why,not for talking during class then something should be done about that.Have your parents speak to the principal & teacher to know exadtly why the two of you were punished. Re the word 'negro' for black the colored girl probably had those words thrown in her face much too often! Explain to her you weren't being racist or derogatory & hope she accepts that.I don't even like to use the word colored,as we're all colored & I'm white. What's the diff cuz are skins are gifferent tones it's the actions of a person that I care about/
11 :
Wow! This is just about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. And that principal should have let you translate for Nina so she would know what was going on. I find that some people really don't like it when they don't understand what is being said around them. I know how you feel though. I have been told a couple of times "Why don't you speak English", when I am speaking Spanish to friends or family. It hurts and it is very annoying. Bottom line is if you want to speak Spanish then do it... don't let people like that make you afraid of your language. I seriously suggest you contact a lawyer and fight this.

iHolla! means hi with spanish como te llamas? what's ur name yo me llamo .....(my name is ....) btw ll there is pronounced as y que lenguea se habla? what language do u speak de donde eres? where are u from i'am taking a spanish course btw if u need any help u can email me :), btw i'll give u some videos which can help dnt forget i know everything about spanish .and if u need any help i'am there for u don't hesitate to ask
2 :
"Me llamo _______________" Fill in the blank with your name. At the end of the introduction, one person says "Mucho gusto", and the other responds "El gusto es mío". You'll learn all this in the classes they give you at the beginning of the session.
3 :
Hola me llamo ________ y soy de _______. (My name is ____ and I'm from _____) Soy _____________ (eg. estudiante, periodista, profesora) (I am a student, a journalist, a teacher). Normally we kiss on each cheek (it's not an actual kiss, just a cheek to cheek motion. If it's a very old/traditional person then it's better to shake hands (to be on the safe side). What you can answer when somebody introduces herself/himself is "Encantada" or "Mucho gusto"
4 :
No not really - I assume you already have a basis in spanish...just remember if someone asks something like "who is it" your response is "Soy ____". Also when meeting women (if you're male or female) you say "Holla soy ___" then kiss left cheek and then right cheek. They use encantado/a for pleased to meet you.
5 :
Hi It is custom here for women & men to greet each other with a double kiss...1 on each cheek although it is more normal for women to kiss both man & woman.....men generally kiss the women on both cheeks & they great other men with a handshake. hope this helps

Wht is the best location to study spanish in Spain in August out of these 3 locations Alicante Malaga Valencia?

Wht is the best location to study spanish in Spain in August out of these 3 locations Alicante Malaga Valencia?
as from above, I am a student looking to study Spanish in Spain during the whole of August. I have narrowed my cities down to: Valencia, Alicanta, and Malaga. I just need help deciding which one would be best. I also want to know what one has the best beaches and what one is the best place to stay for a long time w/out getting bored...any help would be great! thanks!

Valencia. It will be hot, but not as ridiculously hot as Malaga and Alicante. A friend of mine from Valencia, now living in Madrid, once told me that it's a "promiscuous city," for whatever it's worth. In any case, Alicante and Malaga will be full of tourists (German and otherwise) in the summer; Valencia will seem a bit more like a 'real' Spanish city. Although there is officially a dialect of Catalan that's spoken there sometimes, in fact all you'll hear and speak will be Spanish 95% of the time. -- And yes, it has fun beaches nearby.
2 :
I fully support R.J.´s answer. For me Valencia is the best of the large coastal cities in Spain.
3 :
month isn't long enough to get bored anywhere! I'd avoid Málaga, because it's soooooooo British! It's also not my cup of tea...so to speak. (yes...pun intended) I might avoid Valencia, as well, because of the strength of their own language, but more, I know LOTS of people who have studied in Alicante, and LOOOOOOVED it! That said, no matter where you wind up, you'll surely looooooooooooove it!
4 :
The best place to learn Spanish in my opinion would be Peñiscola north of Valencia. It has an amazing beach. Get a copy of El Cid with Charlton Heston. The final scene is El Cid riding out of Valencia to defeat the Moors, but it wasn't Valencia, it was Peñiscola. There are few tourists from the UK there, but it will get overdeveloped eventually.
5 :
Malaga is not british at all, it is the towns surrounding Malaga, such as Torremolinos and Benalmadena which have a lot of British tourists. The beaches on the Costa del Sol in my opinion are not as nice as the beaches on the Costas Brava or Blanca near Valencia and Alicante. In both Valencia and Alicante, people also speak Valenciana which is similar to Catalan. I live in Valencia and people never speak to me in Valenciana as I speak to them in Spanish. All street signs are in Spanish and Valenciana and you see other signs around in both languages. It is great to live in a city that makes an effort to preserve an important part of their culture. Valencia is a big city and there are lots of things to do and it is a very beautiful city, I would not think you would get bored here. I have lived here since May of last year and I am not bored :-). Alicante is smaller and I have visited a few times, but would not like to live there as I found it a lot less interesting than Valencia. I would choose Valencia because there are excellent rail connections to Madrid and Barcelona - you may wish to visit these cities during your stay. Also, there is the metro and buses which take directly to the beach. You will not want to live in the areas closest to the beach because they are not very nice.
6 :
To tell the truth I live in Mijas, Málaga, and I would normally promote our part of Spain with vehemence. But for what you are intending. I too would suggest Valencia. It is one of the top five cities in Spain. It has an excellent ambiance for foreign students. You will find museums, Ciutat de las Artes & Ciencias, Palau de la Musica, plus several marvelous beaches such as La Malvarrosa or Pobla de Farnals. The mediterranean has a good temperature in summer, the water is warmer than here on the Costa del Sol. You could also enjoy the weekends by visiting other places such as Castellón to the north or Alicante to the south, even going up to Barcelona for 2 days is worth the effort. .(By rented car or train, or even bus). Here is the Universidad de Valencia website for you: www.uv.es/~webuv/ingles/index.htm and another that might be of interest ... http://www.spanishinvalencia.com/aip-learn-spanish-valencia-spain/index.htm I am sure you have already looked up lots of information on the city, but just in case, here is one of the best sites for general info... http://www.spain.info/TourSpain/Destinos/TipoI/Datos+Generales/K/TW/0/Datos+Generales?Language=en

What do you know about student exchange programs?

What do you know about student exchange programs?
I really want to go to a foreign country, I'm thinking Spain...maybe. Anyways I was googling Exchange students, and I'm not sure of a good program. So I was wondering if anyone had any information about any good programs. Or any information about becoming an exchange student? Like did you have a good time if you went? Or was it as scary as you thought? Was it worth it? I would really like to go next year, for the whole school year. I dont really know anything about it though. Like do you have to switch with someone else? Or can you just go and not have to have a student from there come live in your house? Well any information would help! Thanks a ton!

You do not have to switch with anyone. I have several friends who have hosted exchange students without any children of their own being involved in the program.
2 :
A family I know hosted a girl from Italy last year named Gianna. Gianna became good friends with one of my friends. Now, my friend is leaving for Italy in 20 days to stay at Gianna's house for a couple months. I'm not sure which program Gianna used. (My friend isn't going through a program)
3 :
Try contacting forte International Exchange Association
4 :
I went to Japan in 2005 though Youth For Understanding. It was a very good program, and I haven't heard of any major problems with the organization. You go to the website, print out the application form, and fill it out. There is a processing fee ($70 I think). There are also scholarshipsfor the program, so that might be all you have to pay! (It was for me!) I had a wonderful time, and I volunteer for YFU now. It was a little scary when I first arrived, but that passed quickly. I went to school there and everything, so I definitely learned a lot. And no, you don't switch with someone else. The "exchange" part is in cultures; you learn about Spain, and your host family learns about where you are from! If you have any more questions, contact me!
5 :
Check the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students. at www.csfes.org. There are no criminal checks of host families in foreign countries and until this year, no even in the USA. No, you do not have to swtich. You lose the school year if you are in high school but you get credit if you go in college. It costs money -- $4000 to $10,000 depending on the exchange placement agency. But check out the agency because there is no money back guarantee if you end up in a dirty house or don't get along with the family or can't handle the school curriculum in Spanish. You will lose your money. Check out the agency, who runs it and how much money it makes and save everything you get from the agency. Thank about it. Would you move in with a strange family on the next block? City? State? Going across the world means check out everything first. If you do not have contact with your host family at least a month before you're supposed to leave watch out. go to www.guidestar.org It doesn't cost any money. Go to advanced search. Then put in the name of the agency and scroll down to the 990s and check out the information. It is great for people who had a good experience but that is not when it counts - what counts is how an agency will handle it when you're in trouble in a foreign country - be careful

I just received an exchange student from Spain in school to be his tour guide. How can I relate to him?

I just received an exchange student from Spain in school to be his tour guide. How can I relate to him?
He's not staying at my house. I'm just directing him around school. He'll be here for 3 weeks. What can I do to make myself interesting? Should I try to improve my Spanish vocabulary? Suggest things to do around Pittsburg (don't worry, I can figure the answer to this question out myself)? Should I become familiar with the local culture? What should he do while he sits in my class, just listen, or should I bring food for him? What would be some interesting questions to ask him while I have the chance? What are some basic conversation starters? Any advice greatly appreciated. Should I allow other kids to take him around for the time he's here? Since I posted this in studying abroad, I guess just picture what you would hope the ideal tour guide would be like for you if you were to study abroad.

Just be yourself. Get to know him like you would get to know any other new student. He will be able to speak English maybe not perfectly but he will be able to understand. Don't just keep the conversation about yourself and Pittsburg. Also ask him about Spain such as: What is it like living in Spain? What do you do for fun in Spain? Are the classes different in Spain? you get the point. Tell him fun stuff to do in Pittsburg and around the school. Make sure he fits in. Let him get to know other students also so he will get to know as many people as he can. Introduce him to new people also so he can fit in easier. Good luck!
2 :
If you can already speak a bit of Spanish, then sure - go ahead and speak a bit of Spanish to him - but remember that he is there to improve his English and learn from you, not to help you improve your Spanish. It would be useful to him if you could perhaps help him a little with his pronuncation, maybe teach him a few new words everyday and introduce him to a few aspects of the culture. Letting other people show him around may also be useful to him in learning from different peope, but make sure that he is comfortable with this before you offload him onto anybody else.

The whole point of hosting an exchange student is to just incorporate them into your daily family life. You don't have to pick any particular activity to entertain her. Just include her in what you do. You will get to know her in no time.
2 :
Well when a student comes from a different country they want to experience your culture and lifestyle, do anything that you would normally do... stick to the same meals, routine and general lifestyle. Offer her things to do like cinema, shopping, ice skating etc. whatever you like doing. Have fun! =]
3 :
Let me be honest with you. When I was 15, my family hosted an exchange student from Mexico who was my age. This is how it went. For the first 2-3 months, we HATED each other!! Then we ended up adjusting and getting used to the situation and now 10 years later we are still best friends. So a few years ago, my family decided to do it again, forgetting all the initial drama, and hosted a Brazilian exchange student who was the same age as my younger sister. She came to me after the first week wondering why she wasn't best freinds with the girl and hated her! Be prepared mentally. They are in a completely new environment and they may lean on you and you may feel like they are "needy" or "mopey". They may cling to you and you may want your space. It will be hard for both of you and its ok to tell them sometimes that you need space. But once you both get used to the new arrangement, it will be awesome!! For activites, we often went to the mall or the pool and just hung out. I did the same things with her that I did with my other friends, but we often had a spanish-english english-spanish dictionary with us at all times. We just tried to have a normal conversation and when we didn't know the word, we'd look it up. Thats how she learned the language. It might be weird at first, but it gets better with time.

How should I dress in Spain, in Madrid?

How should I dress in Spain, in Madrid?
I am going to spain as a foreign exchange student at the end of june, but I don't know what I would wear. Are the styles the same as in America?
Fashion & Accessories - 5 Answers

They're essentially the same, but Europeans as a rule wear more basic pieces and focus more on what looks good on them, rather than wearing what's trendy. Americans also wear a lot more bright colors. So if you want to blend in, neutral colors in classic shapes are the way to go.
2 :
kind of, you cant go wrong with a pair of skinny jeans, colorful nikes and a retro shirt. it seems like teens here almost dress like theyre in the 80' lol but as long as you dont dress like a tourist, and like an actual teenager youll be fine also, remy couldnt be more wrong lmao thats more of like a old person thing
3 :
dress as you would normally dress. bring a bit of america to spain! but remember its gonna be hot hot hot so always remember to take stuff where you wont get too hot and take lots of suncream but still take a few coats/hoodies/jackets because it will soetimes get cold at night (: sunglasses merry christmas (: x
4 :
I studied in Spain recently and went to Madrid... Some older (like 30+) Spaniards wear chunky jewelry and have decent style, but some of them just wear the weirdest stuff. My teacher in Spain had okay style - she wore dark pants, some kind of blouse and a different scarf every day. But the younger girls tend to wear flashier clothes. Some Spaniards shop at stores like Zara and H&M, but they're way different (and wayyy better) there than they are in America. I was worried that my host sister would have amazing style but her style was actually heinous. Wear your own thing, but like someone else said, try not to stand out - because for one things, pickpockets can spot tourists a mile away, (and if you're speaking English too that doesn't help) so maybe bring basics, and you'll for sure want to buy more stuff when you're there.
5 :
1- Luckily in the Spanish cities (Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia ..) you can wear whatever you want that nobody pointed out, there are many urban groups, Gothic, rappers, vintage, retro and more .. 2- If you want to see how most young people wear, these are the brands we use (Spanish) Zara http://www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/category/es/es/zara-sales/16502/ Pull and bear http://www.pullbear.com/#/photos/ Mango http://www.google.es/images?um=1&hl=es&tbs=isch:1&q=mango+ropa&revid=1240027078&sa=X&ei=tPEJTZv8DISE5Aaf2eTsDw&ved=0CDEQ1QIoAA&biw=1280&bih=923 Stradivarius Blanco ............. Yes, you could, although it won't be easy. First you would need to secure a place at a University ( Here's how >> http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/74-applying-to-study-at-university-in-spain.html ) and then you would need to apply for a student visa (Here's how >> http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/100-applying-for-a-student-visa.html )
2 :
Yes, obviously. You can join to any international university, such as Universidad de Navarra, one of the most prestigious universities in spain. In fact, it is the most important Spanish private university and if you really want to study a whole degree in a Spanish university is one of the best options. You must understand that the public university in Spain is a large percentage of existing universities in my country and this makes that the public university generally has a higher level than the private ones. However, there are examples , like the Universidad de Navarra (www.unav.es) that are getting, through their models of the future (Horizonte 2015 in Universidad de Navarra), a major international progression, actually they want to achive a 25% of international students in a near future and this may interest you. In addition, the Universidad de Navarra has a recognised authority in the areas of communication thanks to the FCOM school of communication where many well know spanish journalists have come out from there, some names such as Luis Piedrahita, Iñaki Gabilondo, Lydia Balenciaga, Lourdes Maldonado, Maria Martinez, etc., also it has a great School of Economics which has one of the best Masters MBA in the world and nothing to envy to angloamerican programs. I am talking about IESE that is distributed in different campuses in Madrid and Barcelona, or in places as varied as New York, Shanghai, Sao Paulo etc; there's a better School of Medicine where the Clinica Universidad de Navarra and Cima (Center for Applied Medical Research) are a national and international reference in oncology. Schools could continue with other careers that encompass nutrition, philosophy or engineering that are also a leaders in my country and in many cases nothing to envy to the large complex public universities in Spain. Concluding a bit, the Universidad de Navarra is very Universidad de Navarra (it is a spanish Expression to Emphasise the setence but I don't know if it works in English) and thanks to its projects can become an international benchmark (Remember they are thinking of achieving a 25% of international students). Choose University of Navarra, if you have the option, in my point of view, is a great choice. Look for IESE, CIMA, ISSA, ISEM or Clinica Universidad de Navarra. I am sure that it will convince you about the great university we are talking about.

NO, they don't, whoever told you that has dis-informed you. However if u finish degree & find job & work for 5 years then u get permanent residence in Spain. Once u have PR for 5 years then u can apply for citizenship provided if u pass language & culture test successfully.

Spain does offer student exchanges. The citizenship part is after the fact. They allow immigrants with degrees yes. You can not apply while a student until your degree is almost completed and a company has given you an offer of employment based on your graduation.

Wow I feel ya. I was invited to go to England, France, and the Netherlands. Your trip will cost $6,399 I got that from http://www.studentambassadors.org/pdf/09/2009-Application-Book.pdf if you want to check that out, it has a lot of useful information. What I am doing for money is looking everywhere to find a job and applying. You can also try asking neighbors with kids to babysit. Also I am trying a yard sale and selling stuff on eBay. It isn't real easy getting money but it looks like the trip will be very rewarding and I can't wait! Good luck and have fun!

Becoming a exchange student in Spain..?

Becoming a exchange student in Spain..?
I am 15, and I live in Devon, England. I am extremely interested in languages, particularly Spanish. Which I have taken for GCSE, and I am pretty good at it and I enjoy it. I understand that to truly become fluent in a language, you need to experience it first hand in a true Spanish culture and environment. I have just done work experience in a language school in which students come over to learn English. Watching them learn really made me realize that was what I wanted to do. I am pretty clueless on how to deal with my plans, as I wouldn't know how to go about moving to another country or what program to use. I realize that it will cost and that it will be hard, but it is something I really want to do. However, I'm not sure what my parents will think about this, so I thought that I would get all the information first before I discuss the matter with them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you! :)

There are official exchange programs where a lot of the hassles are taken care of for you. Your school should have information on exchanges they participate in. I know the agencies that handle these in the U.S., but I don't know if they do European exchanges as well. If your school doesn't have the information, Google "language schools Spain" or "exchange programs Spain". It should be quite easy since you are all EU residents- you don't even really need a student visa.

Who has been or currently is a foreign exchange student?

Who has been or currently is a foreign exchange student?
Ok, so there is this foreign exchange student at my school from Spain, and after talking to him, I kind of want to become an exchange student. So, how do you become one? Is it fun and worth it? Why should I become an exchange student? Do you get to pick where you want to go? How do I ask my parents if I can get into the programs?

My name is Shahodat and I've been an exchange student in 06-07 academic year. I am originally from Tajikistan, a small country which was a part of a former Soviet Union. My exchange year in the United States was a blast. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I never regret it, would have done it again and again. After my year in the US I had to return to my country an graduate from the high school there. Now I am back to the States and go to college here. I was very blessed to have such a good organization that found me a very good host family. Right now I am still with them, and we truly became one family. I am planning on taking my hosts to my country. I would suggest you to look for AFS (American Field Service) organization representatives in your area. It's a very reliable organization, and yes, you can choose where you want to go. This organization is mostly volunteers, people love what they are doing so much that they are actually doing it for free. I am currently a volunteer of AFS, and we have about 5-6 Americans sent to other countries each year from our Kansas City area only. Mostly kids go to English speaking countries which will be much easier than let's say going to South America. Germany is another good choice. They do even offer scholarships, so you could probably get part of your trip paid for. Just start talking to your parents how interesting and cool it sounds to go to another country and learn their culture, lifestyle. It is truly an unforgettable experience. You come out as a new stronger person. Once you find someone from the organization you and your parents are always more than welcome to attend some of the monthly meetings they hold to ensure your parents that it is safe. But be prepared that it might be difficult to get your parents' approval. They love you and care about you too much. My Mom was also concerned about this whole thing at first, and then we started attending meetings and talking to people and also studnets who have been abroad before on the same program, and the next thing I knew Mom was more than OK, and actually encouraging me to go to new places and chase your dream! I hope I hepled you a little bit. I would really advise you to try it, because trying this as a teenager will be a thrilling thing to do!

Check out Experiment in International Living. I went to Chile with this program and it was awesome! They even grant scholarships to help pay for the cost of your travel. http://www.experiment.org/ See if they are associated with your school or other schools in your area. If not, you should refer them to the foreign language department at your high school because they're EXCELLENT! You can also check out http://www.amerispan.com/ to see if there are other specific programs in your area for high school students to travel to Spain.

I enjoyed studying abroad more as a college student. If you think about it, you can do SO much more when you're over 18 and it will give you time to study the language of the country in the semesters before you leave to visit (if necessary, if you go to England or Australia you wouldn't need to). Plus, it counts as credits towards your graduation at your 2-year or 4-year school. Living and studying in another country immerses you in what it's like to live like a local, it's such a different experience than just going on vacation as a tourist. It will help you grow more mature and well-rounded, I highly recommend it!

Im going to be an exchange student next school year. You become one by applying (obviously) with an organization. I'm going with CIEE. ill put their link below. of course it would be worth it and fun. i mean, its a once in a lifetime opportunity. you get to learn about a different culture and way of life. Most people because exchange students to further their language study. If you are learning Spanish, you should apply to go to Spain. If youre learning French, you should apply to study in France etc, since all of youre classes will be in that language. with most organizations, you can choose where you go. Keep in mind that most programs range from 10,000 - 20,000 dollars for a year/semester plus about 400 a month for personal things (lunch, hygiene, supplies, etc). dont ask or apply unless you are 100% sure you want to go and can afford it

I would actually recommend doing study abroad in college instead because you are over 18 and you don't have to spend the entire day in another high school. In college study abroad programs you can take like 2 classes and that way you can spend the rest of the day doing cultural things and walking around. But if you want to do it right away just find a program that has a website and look into it. It is DEFINITELY fun and it was one of the best experiences of my life. You get to see a completely different culture and talk to other people from around the world. Its nice because you see how different their lives are compared to yours. DO IT!!!
