Does anyone know how should I proceed with this? I emailed the spanish consulate but it might talke a while for them to answer back so i wanted to see if anyone could give me an answer sooner. Thank you!

Have you talked to your study abroad office at your college or the International Student office? I know it gets really tricky for students with F-1 and J-1 visas, but I'm not sure about green cards.
2 :
As a green card holder, you are not an American citizen and do not have a right to an American passport. You'll need to use your Peruvian passport to apply for the Spanish visa. Also, if you'll be out of the U.S. for a prolonged period of time (several months), it would a wise idea to check with USCIS about the regulations for maintaining your green card status while you're in another country. Enjoy Spain!
3 :
Since you hold a Gren Card you should not have any problem to re-enter the United States after a semester abroad. Should you plan to stay abroad for longer than a year you would need to apply for a re-entry permit through USCIS prior to travel. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1333.html .. To study in Spain, regardless of the length of your studies, you will need to hold a Peruvian passport which is valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay in Spain and you will need to get a visa for Spain. It needs to be applied for at the Consulate General which covers your U.S: state of residence. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Embajadas/Washington/en/MenuPpal/Consulares/Paginas/Consular%20Services.aspx .. For to study for up to 90 days you will need a short stay visa. A long-stay visa is required for longer studies in Spain. SInce student visa applications are forwarded to the authorities in Spain for decision you should apply early in advance. Just read the general information of the Spanish Consulate General in New York. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Consulados/NuevaYork/en/MenuPpal/DocumentaciónRequisitosparaServiciosConsulares/RequirementsEntrSpainVisas/Paginas/Visas.aspx ..

try Valencia there are lots of these there. There was a good one called Galileo galilee but i think it has changed it's name now.

Look,I´m a Spanish citizen. If you were to come in my house,I would probably charge between 150-200 Euros a week, considering you are under the age of 18 and you would be under my responsibility (at least a little bit). This would be for a room and your own bathroom, which is what you have to ask for if you can (privacy!) http://www.cometomyhome.com/ check the web. It´s a Spanish host web.Quite good by the way. All families hosting teenagers and young people have been supervised Make sure you know where you are going (spooky? Hey,just joking here)

Well, if you're going as a tourist, you don't WANT a student visa. You want a TOURIST visa. And you won't be allowed to stay. If you don't have the proper visa documentation, they might not even let you past customs.
2 :
If you just would like to visit Spain and spend up to 90 days there (you are asking from the US, so that's all you're allowed) you don't need a student visa! Relax....unless you are planning to try to find employment and overstay the 90 day limit, you won't have a problem

THey are both awesome and I definitely recommend doing either, but learning spanish could help in the future and you can always visit Italy by train it isnt too far nor too expensive.
2 :
Italy
3 :
i guess it would depend on what studies you're planning to take and why you should go to either spain or italy. both are beautiful countries btw, so much life and culture in them but you have to ask yourself what academics course is best and what country has the best university that program can offer you. besides, if anything, barcelona to milan (or milan to barcelona) is only a train ride away! :) good luck
4 :
well just so you know, spanish isnt the official language of spain. its Castilian which is generally percieved as spanish. but since you know spanish, then go to italy cause learning italian is a heck of a lot easier with your background of spanish
5 :
If you already know Spanish you should take advantage of the opportunity and learn another language. So I say Italy. Which program are you going with? Here's a great exchange student forum you should join, http://www.cultures-shocked.org/Joomla/forum/index.php?

How to find a free host family in Spain for a non-student?

How to find a free host family in Spain for a non-student?
I have thought about Spain for a long time and want to get serious about getting there. I know all about couch surfing and travel companion matches but all I'm looking to do is live for a little while (eg a few months) with a family, help them out on their farm or in their house hold in exchange for a room and meals. Help? Oh, and what papers I would need to apply for to enter and live in Spain, though not permanently.

There are Au Pair agencies. EF and CIEE both arrange those situations. Otherwise, I know of no one who will put you up for free...Your suggestions might work out, but I don't know of any agencies that arrange such a situation. Be careful...there are a lot of "agencies" that are scams out there...make sure you have a reputable one. (the above are both reputable and qualified). If you arrange something privately, you run the risk of finding yourself in a situation that could get very dangerous...such things only happen occasionally, but still..you don't want to be the one...
2 :
If you're a US citizen you will find this very difficult, if not impossible, to do. Firstly, with an American passport you can only stay in Spain (and the Schengen Zone) for 90 days out of every 180 days as a tourist and you cannot work. Long-stay visas are available, but again you cannot work and will need to prove that you can support yourself financially without working. Unemployment in Spain, and the EU, is very high at the moment, and there are many people who might be happy to take this type of work. Spanish and EU citizens will get preference over anyone from outside the EU.
3 :
This site is the best place - designed for people wanting to stay for free, and earn their keep with a little work. http://www.workaway.info/
4 :
This is how it works: when you have a work offer, you apply for a work permit including the contract the employer is offering yo . It's not that you get your work permit and then start looking for a job ,but the opposite. If you work for food and shelter, that's simply illegal. If you work, you get paid, pay taxes and have to be included in the Social Security (so that you have right to health care and those taxes you pay will be used for calculation for your retirement pension). For that kind of job you won't get a work permit at all, since to give a job to a foreigner, there has to be residents here that can't/won't take that job. And since that's not qualified job, with the current unemployment rate it's quite impossible that an employee is willing to go through all that redtape nightmare to hire you. If you want to do that kind of work illegally, I doubt anyone will really dare doing something so risky and illegal for a perfect stranger (it might work with a friend, but a stranger? I doubt it). With a tourists visa you're not allowed to stay here more than 3 months. If you stay longer, you may be deported if the authorities find out you're here without a residence permit. We have lots of illegal immigrants, you may not be deported at all, but the risk is always there. You could try finding some work as au pair, as it has been mentioned. That's the closest to slavery that's legal (working for food and shelter plus an indecently low amount of pocket money) in this country. I don't mean to be harsh, it's only that things are really tough here now.

I personally recommend Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's a great city with its own unique flavor and culture. There are lots of museums, art galleries, concerts and beautiful architecture and history, if that is your thing. You can go to a tango show, a soccer game, skydiving or just walk along the beautiful Rio de la Plata. It is only a short local flight away from some of the most incredible natural wonders of the world, including Tierra del Fuego and the Iguazu waterfalls. Also, BA boasts the best nightlife in Latin America (and the world?) with bars and clubs that don't shut down until well past the sun comes up. I've traveled around most of South America and Europe, and BA is still my favorite place to go. There is a reason why some many people who come here to visit end up staying for some much longer! Can a US college student study aboard in Spain WITHOUT the long-term stay student VISA for Spain?

Can a US college student study aboard in Spain WITHOUT the long-term stay student VISA for Spain?
My program department and I had a misunderstanding about the "new" VISA regulation, so it may be too late to apply for a student VISA to Spain by now (as I only have less than 1.5 month before departure to Spain). I know that I can travel as a tourist for up to 90 days being a US citizen. My question is whether I am able to still do a "year-long study aboard program" in Spain without having a Student VISA by leaving the country (Spain) at the expiration of the 90 days allowed for tourist and travel to a different country, say France, and stay there for a day or two and come back to Spain? Will this allow me to stay in Spain for an additional 90 days? Does it work this way or does it not? Anything is much appreciate! Cruel honesty is welcome as long as it is constructive and sincere! Gracias!

SPAIN - *Passport required. Visa not required for tourist or business stays up to 90 days. (**90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries). U.S. medical report required for residency, student, and work permits. For additional information, contact the Embassy of Spain, 2375 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20037 (202/452-0100 and 728-2330) or nearest Consulate General in CA (415/922-2995 and 213/938-0158), FL (305/446-5511), IL (312/782-4588), LA (504/525-4951), MA (617/536-2506), NY (212/355-4080), PR (787/758-6090), or TX (713/783-6200). Internet: www.spainemb.org
2 :
You'll probably need the visa. Contact the embassy and see what you can do. Better safe than sorry.
3 :
What you suggest...exiting the country and returning a few days later....Yes, it has been done, but it is not really legal. Even though it is a bit late call the spanish Embassy and try to sort it out...they may give you the visa in less time then you think. University classes in Spain usually start at the beginning of october, so you may have 2 full months to get your visa... Your study abroad program is presumably for nine months or is it for a full 12 months?? What University are you supposed to attend?.. They might be able to give you advice also... (By the way...how is your spanish?) Depending on which University you will be attending I might be able to assist you a bit more from here, I live in Andalucía contact me if you like via e-mail.

Do I need a Visa to go to Spain if I have a French student Visa?

Do I need a Visa to go to Spain if I have a French student Visa?
I have a Colombian passport, but I am a legal resident of the United States. I currently have a student Visa for France. Can I travel to other Schengen countries (In this case Spain) without a tourist Visa?

There are no border controls in the Schengen countries. Once you are inside one, like France, you can freely travel around in the others. I had a student visa for Holland and was able to travel to France and Belgium without any additional visa. Even if you dodn't have a visa nobody will stop you because as I say there are no border controls.
2 :
You probably have a category D visa valid for France. Such a visa would allow you to visit other Schengen states for up to 90 days. A category C visa will also allow you to visit other Schengen states provided it is marked “Valable pour états Schengen”. The category and validity of your visa should be printed on the visa sticker. Very likely you are allowed to go to Spain, but do not guess. Normally there are no border controls between Schengen states, but if you do get caught in Spain without the correct visa, your visa to France can be revoked.

Can I arrive in Spain before the dates of my student visa?

Can I arrive in Spain before the dates of my student visa?
I would like to arrive in Spain about 6 days before the start of my visa in order to figure out my apartment and living situation. Can I legally do this? If not, can I arrive in Spain as a tourist, leave the country for a few days, and then arrive on my student visa afterwards? I have two US passports (yes, this is legal. I just travel a lot), but I don't know if there is a certain amount of time that must pass before I can return to the country.

Your passport should be stamped with the visa. Call the people you bought your visa from and see what they have to say, this will not be the first time they have been asked this question. It is always best to talk the visa people direct rather than taking advice from a third party.
2 :
In the Schengen-Handbook which provides details about the implementation of the new EU visa code you can read: A visa applicant who has been issued a Spanish national long stay visa but not yet travelled to Spain may be issued a uniform (or LTV) visa to cover any short stay in any other Member State preceding his stay in Spain. http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/freetravel/visa/docs/c_2010_1620_en.pdf ..[see page 65] Based on this provisions I don't see any problems that you enter before your student visa starts for Spain. U.S. passport holders can enter the Schengen territory without visa for up to 90 days as tourist.
3 :
You already have a visa and you have been instructed as to the dates you may enter. You can go when your visa says so. end of story. Gerd's comment, note "any OTHER Member State..." not Spain.

You must apply for the visa at the Spanish consulate general which covers the state you are residing in. You must make an appointment and either apply in person or by a legal representative. From a Spanish Consulate website: VISA APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED BY MAIL, NOR RETURNED BY MAIL Student visas must be applied for in person or by a legal representative who presents his/her identification and a written notarized authorization from the applicant. The authorization must indicate the name and passport number of the applicant and the name and document number (e.g. driver’s license number or passport number) of the person dropping off the application. Study Abroad Program Directors and/or Coordinators may request authorization from this Consulate to act as legal representatives for their whole group of students. Priority will be given to those visa applications when submitted in a group by a program representative, provided the applications are presented more than one month prior to the departure date. STUDENT VISAS MUST ALWAYS BE PICKED UP IN PERSON BY THE APPLICANT.

I have been studying in Spain and my 6 months on my student visa runs up in mid-July however I was planning on traveling until the end of July. Since Spain is part of the Schengen agreement does that mean when my six months are up I have to leave Spain or all Schengen countries? You need an exit stamp on your passport which shows that you have left the Schengen zone latest on the expiration date of your visa. Hence you have to depart to a country outside of the Schengen agreement. http://dc.the-netherlands.org/Services/Consular_services/Visa/US_citizens/Traveling_to_the_Netherlands/Tourist_and_Business_Visa_for_the_Netherlands_Schengen/See_also/Map_of_Schengen_countries .. http://www.axa-schengen.com/en/schengen-countries .. There is no waiting time to re-enter the Schengen zone as tourist. The 90 days of stay within a six months period only applies for visa-free stay as tourist/visitor or for doing business. http://www.bfm.admin.ch/content/dam/data/migration/rechtsgrundlagen/weisungen_und_kreisschreiben/weisungen_visa/vhbI/visahandbuchI-e.pdf ..

It depends on what country you are from and the agreements your country has with the EU. In most cases, yes you can travel within the EU. Again--best to check first. There are places for online info. Search for the embassy website of your country and go to the travel/visa info page.
2 :
With a long-stay national visa (Type D) for Germany or a residence permit issued in Germany you can travel to all 24 other countries of the Schengen agreement to include Italy, France, and Spain. There are no governmental immigration controls on flights between Schengen countries. You just show your passport/visa/residence permit on check-in or security check, that's it. If I am only on a student visa, can I legally do free work experience in professional business organisations? Would I need to be completley fluent in Spanish? Would I be able to get by by speaking broken spanish, or do they speak in english in professional situations in Spain?

the term is called an internship.....and as long as you are obtaining college credit for your time----I would say yes. Without enrollment in an approved class that gives you work experience credit in an internship type setting---NO.
2 :
It is possible to work on a student visa in Spain, but since the main goal of your stay in Spain is to study, any work you do is very closely regulated. You can work part-time during the school term, or full-time during holidays under three months. However, this falls into two categories: internships (prácticas)and working under a special student work visa (called an Autorización Excepcional de Trabajo). Any internship(paid or unpaid) must be part of your university studies and will be supervised by your university. You also have to be under 30 years old and the internship can be for no more than one year. You don’t need to apply for special permission, as everything is already regulated by an agreement between the university and the employer. The other slightly more complicated way is to apply for a special student work visa (Autorización Excepcional de Trabajo). Once a company has undertaken to hire you, your future employer must apply for it on your behalf and you cannot work during the three months while it is being processed. Otherwise, if you have been lucky in finding a company willing to employ you and you want to apply for a regular work and residence visa while still in Spain, you must have studied legally in Spain for a minimum of three years and have earned passing grades or marks. Otherwise, you must return to your home country to have the visa processed as would any other normal work and residence visa.

I doubt it very much. These are matters that should have been worked out before you set off for Europe.

What does a student from Spain have to do to go to college in the US?

What does a student from Spain have to do to go to college in the US?
Currently I am 16 and from Spain. I want to study filmmaking in the US, but I don't know what i have to do to apply and if is possible some kind of financial aid for international students. Also, if you know about good colleges (about filmmaking) tell me!! =D

Well filmmaking is a type of industry where you have loads of people have degrees in it and hardly any of them can get jobs. For studying it you want to be in California, where the industry thrives. You will have to get your passport before applying, and every school may have slightly different admissions qualifications, so you will have to find a school that you want to attend first. You may be able to get a scholarship, but the main bulk of your aid will have to be in loans.

I am assuming that you are already enrolled at University in your own country ? - If that is the case then I have attached a link that will tell you about the application process - http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/102-applying-for-a-student-exchange-program-in-spain.html
2 :
Tumbit's site is VERY good =] - and has answered many questions I wanted to know also !! (If it works the same for Erasmus for France?) But the people who will be able to advise you the best is YOUR current University, maybe you can even speak to student's who have been to Spain before and ask about their experiences and what they'll do better

It's "EXCHANGE" Student. And you do this through your school. You must already be a student before you can be an exchange student, and you apply to the exchange program at your school.

I'm not sure about that NIE...That's insurance? Or an ID number? Official papers that come from your home country are acquired at your Consulate...Visas come from Spain, so...National offices in your town/city? Ayuntamiento? I assume you have reported this to the police? Did they tell you where to go? What about the school? Are you there on a program? Is there a Director whose job it is to make sure that you are okay? They would be your best resource...
2 :
do you mean you have been robbed or that you have got a job if you have got a job you will loose your student visa as students on a visa are not allowed to work and if you loose your visa you will be sent home to get an nie number you will have to go to your nearest central police station and apply for one you will need your passport so if you are not an eu citizen you will not get one and employers have had so much hassle from the law about hiring people without one they will not employ you if they do they are fined and you are sent home on the first available flight
3 :
Make the report to the Guardia Civil first of all. Apply for the NIE in Comisaría de Policia Nacional. They also have your students visa in the computer. But the "denuncia" at Guardia Civil is the most important!!!

Should I get an exchange student from Spain or Italy?

Should I get an exchange student from Spain or Italy?
I will be hosting an exchange student next semester, and I can't choose whether to get one from Spain or Italy. Any suggestions?

I would choose Italy.

First, thank you for opening your home to a new family member! If it's a short-term arrangement, it doesn't really matter. If this will be a long-term (semester or longer) arrangement, I think it's better to choose someone based on shared interests and personality than on home country. To be blunt, if you don't get along with the student, nationality won't matter much. Likewise, if you do get along, it won't matter much either. I guess it depends on which country you want to learn about more.

My best friend was an exchange student from Spain. She's absolutely lovely, and I've been over to Spain several times to visit her. With that said, her host mom later hosted a girl from Germany and one from Italy simultanelously. The Italian girl was sent home after a few months for sleeping around with guys from the high school, abusing drugs, and so forth. I'm sure this had nothing to do with her nationality, more with her morals and uprbringing. Maybe you could find out a little about both students...and see which one appeals to you more. I'm naturally biased, as I love Spanish people. Nationwide, family seems to be their number one priority...all businesses shut down from 2pm to 5ish every day, and this is when families eat lunch together, have conversation, and simply spend quality time with one another. My best friend frequently talks with her host-mom now, 5 years later. They're very close. I'd go with Spain, but that's just me ;)

I'm italian_ so thank you and choose the italian! Truth is italian and spanish people are very similar! I believe these exchanges eventually lead to you going to Spain or Italy? In this case choose the italian! Hope my suggestion helps you! Oriana from Florence
