Is studying abroad as a foreign exchange student worth it?

Is studying abroad as a foreign exchange student worth it?
Ok, so there is this foreign exchange student at my school from Spain, and after talking to him, I kind of want to become an exchange student. So, how do you become one? Is it fun and worth it? Why should I become an exchange student? Do you get to pick where you want to go? How do I ask my parents if I can get into the programs?

I enjoyed studying abroad more as a college student. If you think about it, you can do SO much more when you're over 18 and it will give you time to study the language of the country in the semesters before you leave to visit (if necessary, if you go to England or Australia you wouldn't need to). Plus, it counts as credits towards your graduation at your 2-year or 4-year school. Living and studying in another country immerses you in what it's like to live like a local, it's such a different experience than just going on vacation as a tourist. It will help you grow more mature and well-rounded, I highly recommend it!

Im going to be an exchange student next school year. You become one by applying (obviously) with an organization. I'm going with CIEE. ill put their link below. of course it would be worth it and fun. i mean, its a once in a lifetime opportunity. you get to learn about a different culture and way of life. Most people because exchange students to further their language study. If you are learning Spanish, you should apply to go to Spain. If youre learning French, you should apply to study in France etc, since all of youre classes will be in that language. with most organizations, you can choose where you go. Keep in mind that most programs range from 10,000 - 20,000 dollars for a year/semester plus about 400 a month for personal things (lunch, hygiene, supplies, etc). dont ask or apply unless you are 100% sure you want to go and can afford it

I would actually recommend doing study abroad in college instead because you are over 18 and you don't have to spend the entire day in another high school. In college study abroad programs you can take like 2 classes and that way you can spend the rest of the day doing cultural things and walking around. But if you want to do it right away just find a program that has a website and look into it. It is DEFINITELY fun and it was one of the best experiences of my life. You get to see a completely different culture and talk to other people from around the world. Its nice because you see how different their lives are compared to yours. DO IT!!!
