Getting a student visa for Spain when I am a NY legal resident?
Hi guys! i am applying to an international academic program in Spain through my college. I'm a little confused though, because I am peruvian but I live in NY (i have a green card). Does anyone know how should I proceed with this? I emailed the spanish consulate but it might talke a while for them to answer back so i wanted to see if anyone could give me an answer sooner. Thank you!

Have you talked to your study abroad office at your college or the International Student office? I know it gets really tricky for students with F-1 and J-1 visas, but I'm not sure about green cards.

As a green card holder, you are not an American citizen and do not have a right to an American passport. You'll need to use your Peruvian passport to apply for the Spanish visa. Also, if you'll be out of the U.S. for a prolonged period of time (several months), it would a wise idea to check with USCIS about the regulations for maintaining your green card status while you're in another country. Enjoy Spain!

Since you hold a Gren Card you should not have any problem to re-enter the United States after a semester abroad. Should you plan to stay abroad for longer than a year you would need to apply for a re-entry permit through USCIS prior to travel. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1333.html .. To study in Spain, regardless of the length of your studies, you will need to hold a Peruvian passport which is valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay in Spain and you will need to get a visa for Spain. It needs to be applied for at the Consulate General which covers your U.S: state of residence. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Embajadas/Washington/en/MenuPpal/Consulares/Paginas/Consular%20Services.aspx .. For to study for up to 90 days you will need a short stay visa. A long-stay visa is required for longer studies in Spain. SInce student visa applications are forwarded to the authorities in Spain for decision you should apply early in advance. Just read the general information of the Spanish Consulate General in New York. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Consulados/NuevaYork/en/MenuPpal/DocumentaciónRequisitosparaServiciosConsulares/RequirementsEntrSpainVisas/Paginas/Visas.aspx ..
